C.V. I got my degree in engineering in 1969. I have been working for CNUCE since 1971 in software systems and control systems, in particular for satellite flight control. I acted as Director of CNUCE (an Istitute dedicated to scientific computing, networking and applications) from 1983 to June 1996. In 1984 I was designated EARN (European Academic Research Network) Director for Italy, at its inception; subsequently I have been involved in a number of projects related to network services for the scientific community, like: - Eureka projects COSINE and EuroCAIRN aiming at establishing a common networking infrastructure in Europe / delegate for Italy; - UNESCO/RINAF (Regional Informatics Network for AFrica project) / Technical Coordinator; - G7 Pilot Projects/GIBN (Global Interoperability of Broadband Networks) / National Coordinator. Furthermore I am an expert in "Telematics for knowledge" designated by the Italian Ministry of University, Scientific and Technological Research and for the European Union. Since May 1995, I am acting as President of TERENA association, the leading organization in Europe and sourrounding areas, where the coordination of technical work conducted by the national research networks is sought as well as a strategic common view on the evolution of the European common infrastructure. Finally, I am acting as special advisor for the Major of the town of Livorno for the information technology matters; I'm giving my contribution for a special project on the exploitation of the civic network in the metropolitan area of Livorno. Statement My interests in the Internet domain are primarily devoted to the research sector, in relation with my activity with TERENA, but are also expanding to other sectors for a number of different reasons: - the "Information Society" is "going global" and is exporting to all sectors of the society the protocols and the applications that where initially developed in the research sector; - CNR and myself are engaged in the technology transfer to the public administration, thus involving a number of new social and organizational issues; - my involvement in the RINAF project has given me the opportunity of facing the real problems encountered by the developing countries where the solutions should imply: low investments, sustainability, robustness and consolidated standards; - the GIBN experience is requiring to conduct negotiations with the international carriers in order to experiment the multimedia services which will be the base for the exploitation of the "Information Society". For the above reasons, I am confident to be in a position to give a positive contribution to the ISOC Advisory Council. ==========================================================================
